Dandelion-based Rubber

An alternative source to natural rubber derived from a specific Russian species of dandelion. The roots of this species contain natural rubber latex and the plant is less sensitive to weather than the rubber tree.

  • Derived from the Russian dandelion because not all dandelions produce rubber. It is extracted from the dandelion root and researchers have even created species that yield higher rubber production.

  • The leaves are separated from the roots. The leaves are reserved for eating while the roots are dried out and further processed. They are then softened in hot water and ground down.

Continental tire has produced and tested the first tires where the tread is made 100% out of dandelion rubber as a polymer.

  • Most natural rubber is taken exclusively from the rubber tree which can only be cultivated in areas around the equator.

Dandelion rubber is derived from a more resilient supply chain and is easy to grow in moderate climates.

The growth cycle of a rubber tree is 7 years versus one year for the dandelion.

  • Similar strength, grip and durability as rubber derived from trees. It has been tested at different speeds and road conditions and passed extensive safety tests.
