Pineapple Leather

A textile made from wasted pineapple leaves. The material is known as Pinatex® invented by Carmen Hijosa. Can be used as an alternative to petroleum based textiles and leather.

  • The leaves are a by-product of existing agriculture and their use creates an additional income stream for farming communitites.

  • The fibers are extracted and dried naturally by the sun or drying ovens if raining. The fibers go through a purification process to create Piñafelt, a non-woven mesh which forms the base of Piñatex. The rolls are shipped by boat from the Phillippines to Spain or Italy for specialized finishing. The original, pluma and mineral collection the Pñafelt is colored using GOTS certified pigments and a resin top coating to give additional strength, durability and water resistance. and turned into a fiber called Piñatex which can be formed into footwear, fashion accessories, and furnishing.

  • No extra land, water or fertilizer or pesticides required. 264 tons of CO2 saved by using instead of burning 825 tons of waste leaves from the pineapple harvest.

  • Strong, versatile, breathable, soft, light, flexible, can be easily stitched or printed on. Various thicknesses and finishes. Abrasion resistant, flexible.
